How to fix 500 Internal Server Error?

Posted December 1, 2015

There are several reasons why you are getting this error.

(1) The server is preventing you from accessing your website because it may have consumed too much CPU power or memory. In that case, your application does not fit with a shared hosting environment. You may need to move on to VPS or Dedicated Server hosting.

(2) Your scripts are malfunctioning due to some files. Here are some tips:

a. Check that your .htaccess files are properly written. Try removing it to see if your website will load fine. If not, make sure to configure your .htaccess with the right syntax.

b. Check your file and directory permissions. Since the server is using su_php, there should be no file or directory with a 777 permission.

c. Check if any of your application theme or plugins is malfunctioning. This is common with Wordpress. You may need to edit your configurations directly with the database.

(3) Sometimes, your script or app is causing the errors because it is poorly coded. For instance, this happens when a page is querying all instances from the database.

Apache often generates a log message for this type of error. Check the error_log file in your public_html directory or your application's subdirectory, or the Error Log module inside your cPanel account.
