What is a subdomain and how to use it?

Posted December 1, 2015

A subdomain enables you to extend your primary domain name into multiple separate websites using the format subdomain.domain.com.

If for example you have "mywebsite.com" as your primary domain name, you may install a blog under "blog.mywebsite.com" or a message board at "forum.mywebsite.com".

To create a subdomain:

1. Log into cPanel.

2. Click on Subdomains.

3. Fill-up the form.

  • Subdomain is your new sub domain name, in our example above it would be "blog" or "forum".
  • Domain is your primary domain, unless you have other aliases, there would be no other option here.
  • Document Root is the file path where you will be uploading your files for this sub domain. Leave this as it is. It's usually in the format /public_html/domain.name. Do not specify a directory outside of public_html.

4. Press Create.
