What is an addon domain and how to use it?

Posted December 1, 2015

Addon domains enable you to use multiple domains in a single web hosting account. Each add-on domain name must be registered separately first.

Before using an add-on domain:

  • Make sure to change the domain's nameservers similar to the nameservers of your primary domain name. You will find your nameservers in your Account Information email. Please open a support ticket if you're unsure.
  • If you purchased your domain name with Hanep Hosting, kindly open a support ticket and this will be handled for you.

To attach an add-on domain to your hosting account:

1. Log into cPanel.

2. Click on Addon Domains.

3. Fill-up the form.

  • Domain Name is your add-on domain.
  • Sub Domain is generated automatically. This would also create a subdomain.domain.com alias in your account.
  • Document Root is the file path where you will be uploading your files for this add-on domain. Leave this as it is. It's usually in the format /public_html/domain.name. Do not specify a directory outside of public_html.

4. Press Add Domain.

Some things to consider:

  • When using an add-on domain, your add-on domain shares the same CPU and memory resources with your primary domain name. It is recommended to purchase an individual hosting package for each domain name instead of consolidating them into one account specially if you're going to install a resource-intensive application.
  • Each add-on domain creates a separate directory under your public_html directory. This is where you will be uploading files for each add-on domain.
  • Right now, there is no automated way to migrate an add-on domain into a primary domain name. If you wish to take this path, you have to manually move your files as well as re-create your email aliases. Please plan accordingly.
