How to check my email using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird?

Posted December 1, 2015

To access your email using Outlook, Thunderbird or any email client software, you first have to get your account's IMAP and SMTP details.

Some software will prefer POP3 but Hanep Hosting recommends IMAP. POP3 will download all your messages to your email client without leaving anything in the server. IMAP, however, will just copy your messages from the server, allowing you to access your messages both through Outlook/Thunderbird and webmail.

To get started, follow these steps:

1. Logon to your cPanel account.

2. Click the Email Accounts icon.

3. Locate the email address you wish to setup, and from the Actions column, click on Set Up Mail Client.

4. Under the Manual Settings pane, copy and paste the information found in the Secure SSL/TLS Settings section. You will use these information later on.

For Microsoft Outlook:

1. Open your MS Outlook program.

2. From the left pane, press Mail.

3. At the top menu bar, press File then Account Settings > Account Settings.

4. At the Email tab, press New.

5. Select "Manually Configure Server Settings" then press Next.

6. Select Internet Email, then press Next.

7. Fill-up the form with the ones you've retrieved earlier.

8. After completing, press More Settings.

9. Under the Outgoing Server tab, fill up the form with the correct details. Press OK.

10. Press Next and You're Done!

For Thunderbird:

1. Open your Thunderbird program.

2. Depending on your settings, your Menu Bar might be disabled by default. Simply click the hamburger menu icon at the top right corner. The icon looks like a 3-stacked horizontal lines.

3. Mouseover New Message > Existing Mail Account.

4. Fill-up the form then press Continue. It will try to auto-discover your settings.

5. If the information is correct, press Continue. Otherwise, select Manual Config and provide the details you've retrieved earlier.

6. Press Continue. You're Done!
